Forest Service Approves 2,600 Acre Timber Sale Near Hungry Horse
The Flathead National Forest has approved 2,600 acres of commercial logging just north of Hungry Horse reservoir.
It's part of the Hungry Lion Resource Management Project, and the Forest Service says about half of the timber sale is within the wildland-urban interface, with the goal of reducing risks to residents and firefighters should a wildfire occur.
The project also includes non-commercial thinning of saplings on about 600 acres to improve western white pine, and about 760 acres of prescribed fire.
Today the Forest Service issued a Finding of No Significant Impact for the project, after performing an Environmental Analysis. That starts the clock ticking on a 45 day objection period, where people who previously commented on the project can challenge any activities the agency has greenlighted.
